VERY FINE/NEAR MINT

She's a thief who lives to steal just for the thrill of breaking the law. He's The Dark Knight, obsessively driven to battle evil with every ounce of his strength. They should keep each other at arm's length, but...they just can't seem to help themselves! Don't miss this issue - things are gonna get messy!

BONUS REVIEW by JOHN SCHAEFER

"Anyone and everyone can play Catwoman, because it’s a delicious part for a female. It’s got the good and bad qualities of being a woman, and there is so much you can do with it. It was so much fun as well, it was insouciant." (Julie Newmar interview with hollywoodchicago.com)

Lets get something out in the open right now. Yes, issue 2 is going to raise the eyebrows of more than just a few of you. But cudos to DC and Judd Winick for throwing even more controversial material at us than in issue #1. (Boo-hoo-hoo! Catwoman's a slut!) No, she's not. In fact, she is precisely what she was always meant to be. She is an seductive, powerful woman, who is slightly off in the head, who has made a very dangerous and exciting career choice. And issue 2 is going to show us just how exciting and dangerous as Selina's friend Lola finds out. What is getting lost in the controversy of leather catsuits, women's undergarmets, and, well lets just say it, boobs, is a really hearty storyline that is overflowing (that is not a boob joke by the way) with action and intrigue. Lost in the debate over hooters, is the mystery over why the ugly horse painting is so important to all these mob types. The humor of Alfred's comments are overlooked due to the outrage over ta-tas.

Now, I'm not saying that it's all wine and roses. I could have done without the facial expressions on page 1 and how does Batman manage to have sex with all his costume on? (Is it a special compartment on his utility belt...Holy Double-untandra, Batman!) This is a good book that's going to get lost in the whirlwind of controversy. This book reads like a Showtime cable series. I'll bet if this was a Showtime series, we'd all be taking about how great it is around the watercooler at work tomorrow morning. I was tempted to write this review as one huge (no boob joke there either) boob joke, but the truth is, that this is a fine book with a believable take on a character that has been and always will be (whether she is portrayed by Julie Newmar in the 60's or in the wonderful Adam Hugh's covers in the 90's) a sultry villianess who has caught the eye (and apparently other parts of his anatomy) of Bruce (Batman) Wayne.
