There's nothing in Kieron Gillen's body of work that suggests he's your go to guy for licensed science fantasy. His work is intimate, character driven, even spread on a giant canvas like 'Journey Into Mystery'. It's this square peg/round hole balance that has made 'Darth Vader' so much fun as a title so far. This issue, we get 'The Full Gillen'. I really don't want to give too much away, but I really need you to know that there's a protocol droid who specializes in torture and an astromech who's been certfied as homicidal. Mix them in with Gillen's answer to Indiana Jones, a rogue archeologist who talks like a Bendis character, who speaks before she thinks and has with a penchant for historical weapons based crime, and you get something special. I can't say its better than the first two issues, but I can say its different in a very good way, because Vader is Vader during all of this, playing the straight man in a comedy of the absurd. Looks great, reads better.
