When DC hit the reboot button, Green Lantern was the only book that picked up right where it previously left off. So there really isn’t any “secret origin” revelation for Hal or Sinestro that readers haven’t already seen a dozen times. Instead of pointlessly digging into the past, this issue does what the series has since Geoff Johns took the mantle in 2004: look to the future, and big changes will follow.

The Annual from last week left us with a HUGE bombshell!! One of the biggest shocks to the GL Universe (well…maybe since Hal became Parallax in ’94, or a few years later “The Final Night”…you get the idea, it’s big!) This issue picks up immediately after, and here’s the spoiler: sector 2814 has a new Green Lantern!!

Aided by the lovely art of Doug Mahnke (boy I’ve missed this man on GL), this is a delicate story dealing with racial discrimination and terrorist plots, but the Johns Mahnke team is more than up to the task. Any story centered on such an emotionally charged, politically themed plot can be tough, but those themes only propel the conflict and serve as a springboard for this incredible introduction.

And this might be the most interesting origin from a DC hero ever: a car thief and suspected terrorist wielding a green ring?? Simon Baz, welcome to the Green Lantern Corps!
