BONUS REVIEW by JOHN SCHAFER

Every now and then, a comic escapes the public eye that is really a wonderful bit of storytelling. Such is this week's new release of Star Trek, Captain's Log: Harriman. Even though I am of the age bracket where I literally grew up watching Star Trek from the very beginning, I can't say that I am a Huge fan. Sure I like the show but I really can't really say that I am a Trekkie.(Is this misspelled, I'm never sure?). Nor have I ever picked up any other IDW Star Trek books. But writer Marc Guggenheim blends the humor of the movie, the witty reparte' between Kirk and Scottie with the tragedy of the 'death' of Kirk as seen through the eyes of Dr. McCoy. With all this in place, he reintroduces us to the somewhat pathetic figure of Captain Harriman, realisticly a walk on character, who's sole purpose in the movie was to 'command' the Enterprise-B until Kirk could take charge. The trick here is that he makes him interesting!!! There are no flashbacks to the life Harriman had before the movie. Guggenheim takes what little characterization Harriman had in the movie and moves forward with it. No spoilers here just simple praise for a well written book. However, I will just say two things, one-if IDW were to publish an Enterprise-B mini-series in the same vein, I would plunk down my $3.99 for it. And two, if I ever needed a shot of Jack Daniels slap in the face reality check, I could only wish it would come from the sagely Dr. Leonard McCoy as played by the late great DeForest Kelly.

I give it 9 out of 10 Grahams
