In this first issue for ultimate Cap, writer Jason Aaron questions what Captain America really stands for. We as readers have always seen Cap as one of the first and finest heroes. I don't like an Avengers team without him. But we never really seen him as a symbol of America's dominance and will thrust upon the rest of the world. Jason Aaron explores these ideas when he introduces a disillusioned version of Cap who has seen his country at it's worst. A Captain America created for the Vietnam War. Now he wants to show Steve Rogers what this country really stands for, injustice. Aaron takes his Cap story into a great direction. In comics, America has always been portrayed as a beacon of good and hope, which is true. Just not for everyone. Writer of Other Side (a Vietnam War book) this series should be REALLY good!.

BONUS REVIEW by MATT STREETS

Does Marvel have some editorial mandate stating that any “ultimatization” of a character means turning them into a total a$$#@!e? Here we have “ultimate” Captain America recklessly storming into a North Korean military base, with a British swat team in support. When the Brits complain about his “headstrong” ways, he advises the leader to “fix his teeth”. Really? This is what Captain America stands for? Obvious racial stereotypes and crude jokes? Mark Millar already set some of the groundwork for this new obnoxious Cap with the then infamous Francophobe lines, but this is just stupid and juvenile. And considering the usually excellent creative team of writer Jason Aaron and artist Ron Garney are behind this garbage only makes it doubly disappointing. It’s rare that a comic makes me feel ashamed to be both an American AND a comic book fan.
