VERY FINE/NEAR MINT

Written By Brian Michael Bendis Pencils & Cover By Stuart Immonen

Wolverine is in the pages of ULTIMATES 3 so why can’t Magneto be here? One of Peter’s friends at Midtown High had a secret: they’re a mutant! But now the secret is out, and it’s all that Spider-Man can do to keep the entire school from totally freaking out! And just to knock the situation into even more of a panic, here comes the most malevolent mutant of all: Magneto, Master of Magnetism!

"Liz Allen’s fiery freak-out continues, but her Amazing soon-to-be Friends, Spidey and Iceman, are there to give her the various ‘it’s okay to be a mutant’ and ‘with great power’ speeches. It’s a talky-not-showy issue, but I mean, did you not look at who writes this book? It’s a Bendis comic. Get ready for double-page spreads of statted panels and word balloon after word balloon. Which normally is okay, since it’s teenagers, and they constantly need to be venting their feelings at one another. It’s a bad thing when, like this issue, those feelings are obvious, clumsily stated, and something the reader has been reading for about 118 issues now. Luckily, there are enough good points to keep this chapter from being completely skippable. Iceman’s a total doofus, which makes for an interesting dynamic with Peter, Kitty, Liz and Johnny. And more crucially, Bendis has made the long-time background character of Kenny into a real fun supporting player, especially after his great speech in the middle of this issue. Overall it’s a step down from recent issues, but with enough quality left to get you to read next month’s issue."
